Alumni Suhoor brings together new and old Georgetown graduates
Georgetown University alumni recently met for a night of fine food, catch-ups and community building as part of the annual alumni Suhoor. The event, which finished off the summer alumni program with a flourish, brought together graduates from Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) and the main campus in Washington DC.
Suhoor is the pre-dawn meal for those fasting during Ramadan, which brings together friends and family during the holy month. This year’s event was open to all alumni in the Gulf region, and was attended by a mix of recent graduates and members of some of GU-Q’s earliest classes. In total, almost 60 people joined the Suhoor, which was held at the St Regis in Doha.
“The Suhoor is an opportunity for our alumni community to network, find out what their peers are up to and to bond in a social atmosphere,” said Sandy Kim, assistant director of student leadership development for GU-Q and university liaison for the alumni board. “It was great to see alumni across all graduation years at one of our biggest events of the year.”
The Suhoor also marked the end of the term of GU-Q’s alumni board, who were involved in organizing events ranging from casual National Sports Day meetups to a professional development course on how to manage personal finances and investments.
The board members, Basil Mhz (SFS-Q ’11), Fatima Mahmoud Ramadan Sanz (SFS-Q ’13) and Nada Soudy (SFS-Q ’11), were thanked for their work over their almost three year term and their role in fostering the alumni community in Qatar and beyond.
Elections for a new alumni board will open in the fall, as the current members depart for other pursuits, including to take up placements in graduate school. Mhz will be studying towards an MSc in Environmental Technology at Imperial College London, while Sanz will pursue a Master of Public Administration at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Soudy currently works for Teach For All, where she is senior associate for growth, strategy, and development for the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.
During the month of Ramadan, GU-Q also hosts a community Iftar, which allows staff, students, faculty and their families to gather together for a sunset meal.
