Sandstorm in Qatar

Thursday April 2, 2015: 06:01 am

Campus Closed

Due to the severe dust storm impacting Qatar, Georgetown University in Qatar is closed with Instructional Continuity on Thursday, April 2, 2015.   The GU-Q building, including the Library and catering services, will be closed.  All events scheduled for today are cancelled.

Classes

On-site instruction is canceled; faculty members scheduled to teach today are encouraged to implement their instructional continuity plans. Affected faculty members should contact Dean MacGregor with questions.

Employees

The GU-Q Building will be closed for all non-emergency employees. Individuals should check with supervisors regarding departmental expectations during this closure.

A small number of employees may be asked to report to work for emergency purposes.  In addition, employees who are required to work to support instructional continuity must do so.  Employees will be directly contacted by supervisors in these cases with further instructions.

Building Status

The GU-Q Building will remain inaccessible for the duration of the closure except to designated emergency personnel.

April 2, 2015.  6:30 pm

Weather forecasters are predicting a continued reduction of dusty conditions into the weekend and visibility has improved significantly this evening. Barring a sudden deterioration in weather conditions, normal operations on campus resume on Friday, April 3rd.  All previously scheduled events for this weekend will proceed, and the Library will open for normal business on Friday (1:00PM to 9:00PM) and Saturday (1:00PM to midnight).  The library is closed Sunday April 5th for Easter.

Any questions related to class rescheduling due to Thursday’s disruption should be directed to Academic Affairs. We appreciate all the cooperation received from the community during this unprecedented event – especially our hardworking cleaning staff working inside the building.  This is the first inclement weather closure in our history.
