Georgetown Celebrates First Graduates of Josoor Institute Partnership

Jasoor Graduation Ceremony

The first cohort of four new programs offered by the Josoor Institute in partnership with Georgetown University were recently honored in a graduation ceremony in Doha. The 64 students completed professional certificate and diploma programs in Major Events Management and Football and Sports Management.

The successful completion of the 18 month programs marked an important milestone in the partnership. As the Institute’s lead academic partner, Georgetown’s industry-leading faculty work to develop, deliver, assess, and review their programs. Launched by Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy in 2013, the Josoor Institute aims to increase national and regional capabilities in the sports and event industries through education, training, professional certification, consultancy and research.

The recent graduation ceremony also saw two Georgetown University in Qatar staff members, Aphrodite Hammad and Carina Lawson, receive the Professional Diploma in Football and Sports Management with distinction. Both Hammad and Lawson completed the program in their spare time, while working as full-time employees at the University.

“We are proud of this first class of graduates – not only because of the contribution toward building Qatar’s knowledge economy, but because two Georgetown employees are counted among them,” said Director of Education, Josoor Institute Initiatives, Dr. Cynthia J. Hebsgaard. “This shows not only the accomplishments of Georgetown faculty in guiding the programs, but also the commitment and caliber of our staff to pursue and excel at them.”

As part of its partnership with the Josoor Institute, Georgetown University leads the development of the professional certificate and diploma programs to enhance managerial and leadership core competencies related to sports and events management. Modules developed by Georgetown cover topics including business strategy, people and leadership, management communication, and financial management.

The second cohort of the professional programs, which are designed to enhance the skills of students interested or currently employed in the sports and events industries, begin in March 2017. The certificate programs are open to those who have completed high school, while a university degree is required for entry into the diploma programs.
