Georgetown Debate Union Wins National Championship for Fourth Year in a Row
The GU-Q Debating Union secured its fourth consecutive victory in the competitive Qatar Universities Debate League Nationals. The achievement underscores GU-Q’s continued excellence in the field of debate.
Three formidable GU-Q teams competed against the best debaters from universities all over the country, each demonstrating exceptional skill to make a crucial contribution to the collective success. Teams of two students participated in the debate, including winning duo Humna Rehan (SFS’26) and Minahil Mahmud (SFS’26), Mamie McCreary (SFS’27) and Neilla Yvonne Uwera (SFS’27); and Noon Elsharif (SFS’27) and Ayah Ahmed (SFS’27).
The hard work and outstanding performance of the young debaters were further recognized through individual awards. Humna was named best speaker of the tournament and best speaker in the final; Minahil the second-best speaker of the overall tournament, and Noon won the award for best novice speaker and seventh best speaker in the tournament.
“I am proud of our team, especially those who started debating this year; their learning curve has been exponential and it’s been a pleasure to train with them. We have an incredible culture of debate at Georgetown and I know this will only continue to grow,” said Debate Union co-chair Minahil.
Dung Tran (SFS’26) and Maahdiya Hossain (SFS’26) also participated as judges. Their supportive roles alongside their teams played a vital role in this year’s success.
This fourth victory for the Debating Union highlights GU-Q’s contributions to a culture of debate in Qatar, and its commitment to educating powerful public speakers and confident critical thinkers engaged in tackling regional and global issues.
