Georgetown Hosts Emergency and Disaster Management Symposium

EDM Launch

The Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies hosted a symposium under the theme of ‘Leadership and Resilience in Emergency Management’ on 20 September. The public event, which was held at Georgetown University in Qatar’s Education City campus, celebrated the launch of the University’s new regionally focused Executive Master’s in Emergency & Disaster Management degree.

The keynote address at the symposium was given by H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry for Qatar. There was also a panel discussion with industry experts including John Galt, country emergency and security manager for Qatar Shell, Dominic Genetti, vice president and joint interest manager at ExxonMobil Qatar, Khalid Al Hashmi, assistant undersecretary for cybersecurity at the Ministry of Transportation and Communication, and Dr. Tim Frazier, faculty director of the Emergency and Disaster Management Program at Georgetown University.

“This event marked an important milestone for the new regionally focused Executive Master’s in Emergency & Disaster Management degree,” said Dr. Kelly Otter, dean of the School of Continuing Studies.

“This event gave our students and the public an opportunity to learn more about the challenges of emergency and disaster management in Qatar and beyond, through the experiences of those who confront these challenges on a daily basis,” said Dr. Tim Frazier, faculty director of the Emergency & Disaster Management program at Georgetown University. “We hope it provided practical examples of the concepts our students will learn about in their coursework.”

The symposium formed part of the first of five residency sessions for the students, who began their studies towards the Executive Master’s in Emergency & Disaster Management degree this Fall. The unique one year program aims to educate the next generation of emergency and disaster management professionals to help Qatar and the broader Middle East region meet the needs of their nations in the face of a diverse range of natural and manmade events.
