Georgetown Hosts Lecture by H.E. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani
Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) and its Al Liwan Qatari Student Club hosted a lecture by His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al-Thani as part of a series of events to commemorate Qatar National Day.
The talk, which was open to the public, was held under the theme of ‘Ingredients of Qatar’s Success Under the Blockade.’
“As an eminent figure in the nation’s economic and financial landscape, H.E. Sheikh Abdullah has extensive experience in leading businesses in Qatar and insight into the steps being taken to diversify the country’s economy,” said GU-Q Dean Ahmad Dallal. “We are positive that the Georgetown community and members of the public will benefit greatly from his expertise.”
Al-Thani is minister of state, chairman of Ooredoo, and the chief executive officer of Qatar Investment Authority, where he oversees and manages the government of Qatar’s investment funds in international and domestic markets.
He was instrumental in the restructuring and regional expansion of Ooredoo since the launch of its growth strategy in 2005, steering Ooredoo from a single-nation telecom operator to a group with a presence in 17 countries spanning North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Prior to joining Ooredoo, he was chief of the Amiri Diwan.
Al-Thani’s lecture forms part of GU-Q’s Qatar National Day celebrations, and follows the Al Liwan club’s National Day fair and a public lecture by His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, former deputy prime minister and minister of energy and industry for Qatar. As the main Qatar National Day celebrations take place over the University’s winter break, students at GU-Q organize their events earlier each year so that they can still take part in the festivities.
