Georgetown Researchers Speak on Media in Transitional Democracies
Professor Mohamed Zayani and Dr. Suzi Mirgani of the Center for International and Regional Studies were among the experts and scholars invited to take part in a recent conference in Doha.
Titled ‘Media in Political Transition: The Cases of Tunisia, Morocco, and Turkey’, the meeting was organized by Cambridge University’s Centre for the Study of the International Relations of the Middle East and North Africa and the Al Jazeera Center for Studies.
During the two-day conference, Zayani took part in a panel discussion on media structure and governance while Mirgani moderated a panel on media surveillance.
The conference is the culmination of a three-year research project aimed at understanding ongoing changes in the media systems across the Middle East and North Africa region. In addition to the researchers involved in the project, the conference featured a number of invited scholars, policy makers and media practitioners.
Mohamed Zayani and Suzi Mirgani’s recently released book is titled Bullets and Bulletins: Media and Politics in the Wake of the Arab Uprisings (Oxford University Press).
