Georgetown SFS-Q Students Donate Food to Families in Need

The Qatari Students Society of Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Q) organized the first ever “Georgetown University in Qatar Donations Week.” The week-long project aimed to collect donations for families in need, here in Qatar.

More than 60 cardboard boxes were donated by SFS-Q students, which included necessities such as long-lasting flour, baby milk powder, dates, vegetable oil, canned goods, powdered milk, sugar, as well as clothing and children’s toys. Members of the Qatari Student Society then gave the boxes out to those families with the greatest need in Doha.

Haya Al-Thani, SFS-Q student and member of Qatari Student Society commented, “SFS-Q students really want to give back to the society they are part of, and this is one important way of doing so. Following the collection of supplies, we then mapped out some of the poorest areas in Doha and travelled around giving one box per family. We focused on families in Qatar that have very little, most with no jobs and little money.”

Al-Thani went onto say, “The motivation for the charity initiative was to support poor families in Qatar as well as raise awareness of the people in need that are at our doorstep. It’s a very heart-warming experience to know you are doing what you can to help. The response by the Georgetown community has been outstanding and we intend to make this an annual event.”

The event is one of many that SFS-Q students have organized to support local and international causes. Earlier this month the SFS-Q Women’s Society and Development Club raised 41,000 QR at a successful Breast Cancer Fundraiser.
