Georgetown Takes Part in Education City Career Fair 2016
On February 1-2, our students and alumni took part in the second joint Education City Career Fair at HBKU student center for an opportunity to meet with more than 100 potential employers in Qatar and beyond. The sectors represented included finance, oil and gas, media, technology, education and research. Business cards were exchanged and CVs shared, with at least two Georgetown students securing on-the-spot interviews.
At the event, Georgetown also provided general information to employers about SFS-Q’s programs, as well as admission information for members of the public who wanted to know more about the University.
Staff volunteers were on hand to provide mentoring to students in need of extra support in overcoming any hesitation in networking.
A “reaffirmation of commitment” media event was also held between SFS-Q and Blue Rubicon, which sponsors several students each year for an all-expenses paid internship in London. In attendance were Dean Nonneman and Neil Daugherty, Blue Rubicon’s Managing Director. Also on hand were Brendan Hill, Associate Dean for Students and Todd Olson, Vice President for Student Affairs from Main Campus.
“The fair is fantastic for our students and alumni, because it provides an important opportunity for them to professionally network across a wide range of industries, and to gain access to information on internships, jobs, industry and company backgrounds, and of course, direct access to employers themselves. For employers, it’s a valuable opportunity to access a labor pool of highly skilled Georgetown students,” said Lisa Andrewes, a Career Development Manager in the Office of Student Development.
“Not only does this provide a convenient logistical service, the career fair is even more important given the recent economic downturn globally, and tightening of the job market locally.”
Lisa and the entire Career Development team are tasked with organizing both Georgetown’s participation in the fair, as well as preparing students and alumni for what often is the first professional career step a student takes. Planning for the Career Fair takes months of preparation, and includes letting employers know about Georgetown through targeted meetings, invitations to present on campus, and tailored programs just for Georgetown students.
“Georgetown students are offered full support throughout their career development and job search,” added Lisa.
The fair was sponsored by Qatar Shell, and organised in collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, Northwestern University in Qatar, HEC Paris in Qatar and UCL Qatar.
