Georgetown University Hosts Information Sessions on New Executive Master’s Degree

Executive Master's in Emergency and Disaster Management info session

Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies (SCS) recently organized two information sessions in the Gulf region to share details of a new Executive Master’s degree with potential participants.

The events, held in Doha and Abu Dhabi, allowed professionals interested in the Executive Master of Professional Studies in Emergency and Disaster Management to meet with faculty and alumni to learn more about the degree. Endorsed by the GCC Emergency Management Center, the degree is the first of its kind in the region, and specifically caters to the unique challenges and potential man-made and environmental emergencies that may affect GCC countries.

“The idea for this program was generated more than two years ago through conversations with Dr. Al Tamimi,” said Daniel Stoll, associate dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs at Georgetown University, explaining how Georgetown worked with the chairman of the GCC Emergency Management Center to put together a program that would meet a regional need.

The 15-month intensive program features critical thinking exercises, hands-on practice, and engagement with some of the world’s top industry experts and organizations. Students learn through a blend of online courses and on-site residencies in the United States, Qatar and Oman, which are tailored to meet the needs and schedules of working professionals.

“When we’re talking about emergency and disaster management, we’re not just talking about response. We aim to provide the critical skills needed to strategically approach the issue. It’s a complex problem that requires a complex solution,” said Dr. Tim Frazier, programs director at Georgetown University SCS.

All materials for the program, including a completed online application, personal essay, two letters of recommendation, transcripts, ECE/WES transcript evaluations, and TOEFL scores or proof of degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction must be received by December 1, 2016 in order for the application to be considered.
