Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar Welcomes Class of 2016

Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFSQ) inducted its newest class of students at a convocation ceremony on Thursday August 30, following a full week of new student orientation activities. The activities for the incoming freshmen included introduction of this year’s theme based on the roaring 1920s, student placement testing and a dhow cruise. University officials welcomed 83 new students to Georgetown’s Education City campus in Doha, Qatar.

At the convocation welcome addresses Dean Gerd Nonneman said: “Together we are setting off on this voyage of discovery and growth. Our aim at Georgetown in Doha is to ‘Educate the Whole Person’ – this is one of the central mottos of Georgetown as a whole, and draws on a centuries-old Jesuit tradition of learning that underpins the university. I hope the next four years will be an enriching and fulfilling experience and that we provide you with the knowledge and skills that will help both you and the community.”

The dean also noted, “The Class of 2016 is our biggest intake to date – well exceeding our expectations. It is gratifying to see that word is spreading fast about the quality of education we provide here at the Qatar campus.” He concluded, “This puts us in a good position to help not only these students but the State of Qatar and the region in building the critical capabilities for an ambitious future.”

Majed Sultan Al-Maadeed is among the incoming students that make up the SFS-Q Class of 2016. Majed is a Qatari student who graduated from the DeBakey High School and the Academic Bridge Program (ABP). While at DeBakey, he traveled to Houston, Texas for a school visit, receiving a Leadership Certificate from U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee. Majed was also a part of the ABP Debate Club, MUN Club and played a major role in the football team. Furthermore, Majed has a huge interest in Japanese culture which started after he visited the land of the rising sun.

“I am very excited to be a part of Georgetown University here in Qatar. I chose Georgetown because of the multicultural atmosphere it will offer me. I will be able to get an international degree from a world-class university, right here in Qatar – what else could I ask for!” Majed declared with enthusiasm.

Majed will be joined by his fellow SFS-Q freshman to make the largest and most diverse class at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar yet. The 82 students of the Class of 2016’s include 32 international students representing 23 different nationalities.
