John has worked in higher education since 1995 and currently serves as Director of Student Life within the Division of Student Affairs. He enjoys all aspects of college athletics, especially the Georgetown basketball teams. John leads an active lifestyle and holds to the belief that one should find time to walk outside each day, no matter the weather! When he’s not walking and admiring nature, John finds fulfilment through the diverse, often times existential, conversations with students.

John has focused on identity formation in emerging adulthood with a specific interest in how this unfolds in college students. He has worked with students from varied ethnic backgrounds but spent the majority of his career assisting low-income, first-generation, and/or students of color navigate the complexities of university life. He strives to consider and incorporate socio- cultural factors when advising, teaching, and developing student programs. With over 20 years of experience working in University Counseling Centers, John’s clinical skills assist him in supporting vulnerable students and developing programs that promote self-exploration, resiliency, and a greater sense of belonging.

John has the following degrees; B.A. Rutgers University, Psychology & Africana Studies (1987) M.A. Bowie State University, Counseling Psychology; Adlerian Psychotherapy) (1994) Ph.D. Florida State University, Counseling Psychology (2002)
