New Community Classes on Offer at Georgetown

Community Classes

Starting the week of March 11, members of the public will have the opportunity to learn a new skill or explore personal interests through a diverse range of courses on offer at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q). The Spring session of the University’s popular Community Education Program includes a lineup of 17 courses taught by GU-Q faculty and staff, industry experts, and leading academics in Qatar.

Community classes are open to all, with weekly sessions held in the evenings at the GU-Q campus in Education City to suit the needs of working professionals. A number of these classes are taught exclusively in Arabic, including Formal Spoken Arabic and Co-Active Coaching.

For the first time this year, GU-Q’s founding dean, Professor James Reardon-Anderson, will be offering a course titled ‘Map of the Modern World’. The course is an adapted version of the class he teaches to Georgetown undergraduate students, which will be enhanced to take into account the broader experiences of community class participants.

“The course will cover the impact of physical geography on the history and current events in various regions of the world, including the United States, Europe, Russia, China, and the Middle East,” explained Reardon-Anderson. “The course is open to all interested parties – no prior knowledge is required.”

Another new course which has already proven popular will be taught by Professor Clyde Wilcox, a professor of government at Georgetown University. Titled ‘Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and the American Presidency,’ it focuses on the 2016 U.S. elections and the first year of Trump’s term in the White House.

“I think that there is enormous interest in Donald Trump’s surprise victory and in Clinton’s loss. And tremendous confusion, even in the US, as to how this happened,” said Wilcox. “I hope students will take away a better understanding of American elections, on the eve of a set of Congressional elections that are very important as well.”

While registration is open until the end of the first week of classes (March 17), GU-Q encourages interested students to sign up online to book their spot early. The classes are open to all students over the age of 18, and no previous qualification or degree is required in order to enroll.
