New Student Orientation at QF partner Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) kicked off, this week, welcoming the newest cohort of first year students and ensuring a successful start to their higher education journey. The virtual program, held over three days, connected more than 110 new students from Qatar and around the world with the resources, guidance, and strategies needed to thrive at GU-Q.

The Arab Spring uprisings of a decade ago were rooted in demands for dignity and economic opportunity, complex notions tied to the relationship between citizens and the state. A new book titled the Routledge Handbook of Citizenship in the Middle East and North Africa (Routledge 2021) co-edited and co-written by QF partner Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) researcher Zahra Babar highlights how various conceptions of citizenship played critical roles in these events as well as other contemporary issues in the region, knowledge which makes an important contribution to an understudied field.

Demonstrating the Georgetown values of Cura Personalis and Contemplation in Action, students at QF partner GU-Q Iman Ismail (SFS’22), Jawaher Al-Shamari (SFS’22), and Mae Al Shebani (SFS’22), served as inspiring role models by hosting workshops during the 2021 Qatar Youth Power (QYP) Conference that took place virtually in partnership with Maker Majlis, a platform under the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU).

Only days before the start of the summer Olympic games in Japan, Visiting Associate Professor at GU-Q Dr. Danyel Reiche hosted a webinar on “The Politics of the Tokyo Olympics”, presented by The Political Studies Association (PSA) Sport and Politics Working Group. Dr. Reiche,  who heads GU-Q’s Building a Legacy: Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 research  initiative at GU-Q’s Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS), is also the chair of the PSA working group.

Georgetown Student Wins Fellowship to Study Peacebuilding in Kashmir

Syed Taha Kaleem, a senior at QF partner Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q), has been selected as the Berkley Center-Pulitzer Center international reporting fellow for summer 2021. His project will explore the important role of religious shrines in Kashmiri society and examine the ways they foster peacebuilding.
