Professor Mohamed Zayani Delivers Keynote Address at LSE
Professor Mohamed Zayani delivered the keynote address at the Personalized Media and Participatory Culture Conference, which was held at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on June 29-30, 2017.
His lecture discussed the intricate relationship between politics, communication, and participatory networks in a changing Middle East and North Africa region. It paid particular attention to the way information and communication technologies are reshaping the dynamics of political socialization and altering power relations within authoritarian contexts and during the transitional period following the 2011 Arab uprisings.
Hosted by the media and communications department and the Middle East Centre at LSE, the conference focused on the intersection of online and offline cultural production and civic participation for young people, with a particular focus on the histories and methods of youth activism in the region.
Professor Zayani is the director of the Media and Politics Program at GU-Q, an affiliate faculty with Georgetown University’s Communication Culture and Technology Program, and a research fellow with the University of British Columbia’s Liu Institute for Global Issues.
His book Networked Publics and Digital Contention (Oxford University Press) was awarded the International Communication Association’s Global Communication & Social Change Best Book Award in 2016. His forthcoming book, which is supported by the Georgetown University Center for International and Regional Studies, is titled The Digital Middle East: State and Society in the Information Age (Oxford University Press).
