Qatar’s Minister of State becomes Georgetown’s First Ambassador in Residence

Qatar’s Minister of State, H.E. Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, has joined Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) as the school’s first Ambassador in Residence. During his tenure at GU-Q, H.E., whose career in international politics and diplomacy has spanned decades, will be available to share his extensive experience and expertise with the GU-Q community and participate in high level initiatives.

“We are honored to welcome His Excellency, Dr. Hamad Al-Kawari, as the first Ambassador in Residence at GU-Q,” said Dr. Ahmad Dallal, Dean of GU-Q.“At Georgetown, we strive to connect our campus community to seasoned diplomats in order to develop networks between the university and public sectors, and create valuable opportunities to learn how real-world diplomacy works. Our students of international affairs are extremely privileged to have the mentorship of one of Qatar’s preeminent statesmen through this newly launched program.”

“Strong international relations are the most important paths to a peaceful world, and throughout my career as a professional diplomat, I have sought to connect with and teach new generations, in order to inspire our youth to take on new challenges.  I am very pleased to have the opportunity to do so at Georgetown, an institution known for its foreign service education, and which serves as an important platform for dialogue and exchange in Qatar’s dynamic and multicultural community,” said H.E. Dr. Al-Kawari.

Prior to his current role in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Al-Kawari served as the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage of Qatar from 2008 until 2016. He also has an extensive resume as an Ambassador of Qatar, serving in many countries including France and the United States, as well as with the United Nations.   

While serving as the Delegate of Qatar to the U.N., he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the General Assembly at its 40th session and Chairman of the Special Political Committee. H.E. was also a candidate in the 2017 election of the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). H.E. Dr. Al-Kawari holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stony Brook University in America, and has published several books and essays. His book [‘Ala Qadri Ahli al-‘Azmi] presenting his own perspectives on the varied political and social issues facing Qatar and the Arab world, has been published in three languages – Arabic, English and French.

GU-Q’s Ambassador in Residence program connects prominent figures from the public sector in Qatar to GU-Q’s community. The program aims to establish avenues of ongoing collaboration with innovative thinkers and sector leaders in order to further GU-Q’s academic, research, and service efforts.
