Registration Opens for Georgetown’s Spring Community Classes
Building on the success of its most popular series of community classes to date, Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) has opened registration for the spring session of its Community Education Program. Starting the week of March 12, members of the public in Qatar will have the opportunity to learn a new skill or explore a personal interest through a diverse range of courses.
The University’s Community Education Program is open to all nationals and residents of Qatar, with weekly classes held in the evenings to suit the needs of working professionals. There are 15 courses on offer this Spring, which will be taught over six weeks at GU-Q’s Education City campus. A number of these classes are taught exclusively in Arabic, including Arabic Formal Writing, Understanding Islamic Manuscripts, Public Finance Fundamentals, and Co-Active Coaching.
The line-up for the Spring session includes six new courses, which cover topics ranging from information systems to data visualization and managing WordPress websites. Classes are taught by a range of GU-Q faculty and staff, as well as leading academics and private sector experts in Qatar.
One of the courses which will be offered for the first time is Arabic Masterpieces in English, which provides participants with translated versions of celebrated publications. “This course will provide students with the opportunity to read and enjoy a brief selection of major 20th Century Arabic literature, but in English,” explains course instructor Abdul Rahman Chamseddine. “The focus will be on the modern period that has witnessed a flourishing of the new literary genres, such as novels, short stories, and plays. Have you ever had the chance to explore modern Arabic literature without learning Arabic?”
While the community classes are not for formal credit, participants who attend at least five out of the six classes receive a certificate of completion. To date, more than 500 students have taken part in the program, which GU-Q has offered twice a year since March 2015.
While registration is open until the end of the first week of classes (March 16), GU-Q is offering a discount on fees for students who register before February 23, 2017. The classes are open to students over the age of 18, and no previous qualification or degree is required in order to enroll.
