Student Calligraphy Exhibition Celebrates Love of Arabic Language
Eight weeks. That’s all it took for 12 Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) students to delve into Arabic calligraphy and create stunning art. Guided by Sargis Simonyan (SFS’25), who discovered his love of calligraphy in his first-year Arabic class at GU-Q, they explored the history and techniques of Arabic calligraphy, resulting in striking pieces showcased in our Spring 2024 exhibition.
Zhenghe Qian’s (SFS’27) piece, “Seek Knowledge Even as Far as China,” symbolized his journey from China to the Arab world as he learned Arabic. In contrast, Hind Mubarak Al-Mohannadi’s (SFS’25) “Ocean” was more about the destination. “Through my piece, I strive to reflect the captivating essence of the seas I cherish,” she shared.
In another corner of the exhibition, Azamjon Gafforov’s (SFS’27) “Peace Be Upon You” celebrated the universal greeting of peace, while Zahra Saboorzadeh’s (SFS’25) “There Is Telepathy Between Hearts” emphasized the less visible connections that bind us. “If two hearts are meant to be, they will find each other,” she reflected.
These are just a few examples of the incredible artwork created by our international affairs students. They saw the power of culture to bring people together firsthand at the exhibition’s opening day, where certificates of completion were awarded to the participants.
